Everyone is hired for a reason and given independence to do great things. We surround ourselves with smart people. To learn from one another, we share ideas openly and collaborate. We challenge the status quo and embrace change to find a better solution.
Andy Li adds to the Garrison Point Team with his expertise in accounting, fund administration, and taxation. Andy oversees all accounting policies and procedures of our private funds and is responsible for the overall accounting and financial reporting of all operating entities.
Prior to joining Garrison Point in 2012, he was responsible for the accounting, operations, and taxes for many large hedge funds at Citco Fund Services. While there, Andy dealt with accounting and tax issues related to various complex financial instruments, onshore and offshore entities, and elaborate fund structures.
Andy is a Certified Public Accountant and received his B.S. in Economics from the University of California Davis in 2007.
My motto is: “Always be learning; always be improving.”
Outside of work Andy loves to play in the park with his young daughter and read fantasy novels.
If Andy could move anywhere tomorrow he would go to Minnesota because of the lifestyle, smaller population, and space. But as a native San Franciscan who has never been to Minnesota, we aren’t sure how he came up with that.
Brian Loo, Chief Investment Officer, Partner, and Portfolio Manager, brings over 20 years of institutional fund management experience to the team. He leads the firm’s new investment opportunities and is responsible for marketing and growth coordination for the AlphaCentric Income Opportunities Fund. Brian is a member of the Investment Committee at Garrison Point Capital.
Prior to Garrison Point, he was a structured products portfolio manager at MetWest/TCW. Brian was one of the founders of Metropolitan West Asset Management which began in 1996 and was later acquired by TCW in 2009. While there, Brian traded a wide range of fixed income securities including residential mortgage backed securities, asset backed securities, and structured products.
He holds a B.S. in Math/Applied Science with a specialization in Computing from UCLA, an MSIA from Carnegie Mellon, and is a CFA charterholder.
If I could fix something in the industry it would be to “get rid of the boy’s club mentality, which impacts career growth and equal opportunities.”
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and four daughters, going to the beach or the snow, and exercising. As a kid, he wanted to grow up and do something in finance with lots of numbers. Mission accomplished.
Brian’s hidden talents include very useful trivia knowledge and cooking a mean smoked brisket. Shanks in advance for the recipe Brian!
Julie is the CCO of Garrison Point Capital (“GPC”). She oversees legal, marketing, and compliance initiatives for GPC.
Julie’s career in the securities industry began in 1999 as an options analyst for The Pacific Options Exchange then continued at San Francisco Sentry from 2000 to 2017. At San Francisco Sentry, Julie served as the COO and CCO for their Broker-Dealer and several Registered Investment Advisers, lead private equity initiatives for the firm, and created the RIA Platform offering. She was responsible for creating and overseeing the business development plans of each Investment Adviser that joined the Platform, ranging from holistic wealth management of the UHNW to hedge funds and 40 Acts funds.
Julie received her CRCP designation through The FINRA Institute at Wharton after she was chosen by FINRA to receive a merit-based scholarship to attend. She received her B.S. in Finance from Golden Gate University in 1998. In college, Julie co-founded a juice and smoothie business which developed into a franchise chain.
If I could fix something in the industry it would be to “get more women into finance and dramatically impact the fact that only 16% of wealth managers are female.”
On an ideal weekend, Julie can be found with her husband and two daughters, reading, doing yoga, biking, riding horses, or hiking with her animals. Breakfast consists of making pancakes, eggs benedict, or something the girls are in the mood for. However, ideal weekends are quite rare.
Realistically, she can be found at a swim meet, ballet class, horseback riding lesson, little girl’s birthday party, or frantically driving between any one of those activities with one or both of her daughters.
She loves silent retreats (see paragraph above if you are wondering why) and completed her yoga instructor training after returning from a meditation retreat in India. If you need a guided workout or help meditating after a long day, look no further. Namaste.
Garrett Smith, CEO, is responsible for setting the firm’s long term strategic direction, including the launch of the AlphaCentric Income Opportunities Fund. Garrett is a Founding Partner, Portfolio Manager, and a member of the Investment Committee at Garrison Point Capital.
From 2009 to 2012, Garrett built one of the largest high net worth businesses at Barclays, supervising over one billion dollars in fixed income assets. Before that, he was a Securitized Products trader at Lehman Brothers in New York where he traded Agency and Non-Agency Mortgage Backed Securities.
Earlier in his professional career, Garrett served as a Naval Flight Officer in the U.S. Navy where he logged over 400 carrier landings onboard the USS Kitty Hawk in an S-3 Viking.
Garrett received his MBA (Analytical Finance) and MEM degrees from Northwestern University and B.S. degrees from the United States Naval Academy (Systems Engineering) and University of Maryland (Business). While at the Naval Academy, Garrett was captain of the varsity football team and still enjoys a close relationship with the team and staff.
My favorite part about coming to work every day is “talking about the markets and discovering value.”
Garrett recently moved to Boise, Idaho with his wife and four children. His weekend activities have changed quite a bit since his move from the Bay Area. Now, he can be found fishing with his kids, exploring the great outdoors in Idaho, doing CrossFit, or playing rugby.
While this may come as a surprise, Garrett, the retired Naval Flight Officer and CrossFit fanatic, is very close to finally being able to do a full split! Don’t rip your pants, Garrett – we’re all cheering you on!
Jonathan Tran is a Partner, Managing Director, and a member of the Investment Committee at Garrison Point Capital. He primarily trades RMBS and oversees portfolio analytics and modeling for the main fund. In addition, he heads operations management and product branding at the company level. He is passionate about developing innovative, scalable, bespoke solutions for Garrison Point. Jonathan teamed up with Garrison Point’s founding principals at Barclays in 2010 to help them build the firm’s profitable West Coast fixed income business.
Before moving to the West Coast, Jonathan was an investment banker for Citigroup Global Markets in NYC, where he specialized in the structuring and origination of initial public offerings, convertible securities, and equity follow-on deals for both corporate entities and financial sponsors. He covered financial, energy and power institutions.
Jonathan received a B.S. in Finance from The University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Business.
If I could leave a mark in the industry, I would bootstrap and develop an impactful FinTech product to help retail investors achieve financial freedom – then give it away for free.
When Jonathan walks into the office you can almost always hear a spinning wheel too. Outside of work, Jonathan searches for gnarly mountain biking trails across the West Coast, dreams up his next outdoor adventure abroad, reads at coffee shops, or spends time with close family and friends.
