National Nonprofit Day was celebrated on August 17th, but we didn’t think one day was enough time to honor the active and visionary nonprofit organizations that serve as the keystones of our thriving communities. At Treehouse Wealth Advisors, we recognize and value organizations that are driven by a passion to serve others. Nonprofits cover a wide range of services and industries, making it nearly impossible to find someone who hasn’t been directly impacted by one at some point in their daily lives. Whether enjoying our protected rivers, forests and open spaces, or learning to swim through a community-directed youth program, you or someone you know is within the far and essential reach of a nonprofit.
Nonprofits in California are major contributors to our economy. One in every 14 California jobs is at a nonprofit organization, and more than 1.2 million people are employed by nonprofits in California (accounting for 7% of all California employment). Nonprofits rank as the 3rd largest by wages among key industries in California and the 4th largest by number of jobs, producing more jobs than finance and insurance, wholesale trade, or construction. The nonprofit sector’s workforce is more diverse by gender and race/ethnicity compared to the entire adult civilian workforce. California volunteers contribute approximately $16.6 billion in unpaid labor each year, the equivalent of 331,058 full-time jobs, most of it in direct work with people, animals, and the land.
Nonprofits step in to educate, support, preserve, serve, and dream for and with their communities. It’s their aspirational vision that enhances our communities and allows greatness to be possible for everyone. They often do this with small budgets and big hearts. Their talented teams have enormous drive and love for their mission. It’s our turn to put the spotlight on them and highlight their great work. Here are just a few that we love:
Girls Leadership teaches girls to exercise the power of their voice.
This organization is helping cultivate strong young women so they can lead their communities forward and make their mark on the world at an early age. Not only do they work with young girls, but they also focus on educating their primary influences – parents, caregivers, and teachers. Julie has had the privilege to attend two of the Girls Leadership programs with her daughter. They made the experience of learning about your voice, your worth, and your impact fun while being engaging, content-rich, and applicable to everyday life.
Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.
Habitat for Humanity brings people together to help build affordable homes and communities for those with limited resources. Habitat for Humanity is located in more than 70 countries and has improved the living conditions for more than 29 million people. Newton helped build a home in California, a state that often struggles with affordable housing solutions. Knowing that he was able to build a home for a family to raise their kids in made the entire experience very rewarding.
The Powerhouse Science Center has provided interactive programs and exhibits specifically geared toward science and nature for children in the Sacramento area for nearly 70 years. This nonprofit is near and dear to Stacey’s heart because of all the time she spent there as a child, utilizing this hands-on learning space that helped foster her love for math and science. Now that families are looking for more unique ways to educate and entertain their children, the Powerhouse Science Center provides awesome programs to encourage STEM learning at home.
Frontline Foods supports communities in times of crisis.
While Frontline Foods is a relatively new nonprofit, born in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, it has quickly spread from supporting the San Francisco Bay Area to supporting over 50 cities across the country. Their two-fold mission supports the local economy by using donations to bring restaurant staff back to work preparing meals and by providing meals to frontline workers fighting the pandemic. Their work has been inspiring in 2020, and Frances is excited to see what they are able to accomplish moving forward!
CalTrout works to ensure that resilient wild fish thrive in healthy waters for a better California.
Founded by a group of anglers in 1971, CalTrout was the first fishermen-led statewide conservation group in the country. Born out of a concern for the deteriorating conditions of fresh-water fish habitats, CalTrout has grown to include more than sixty conservation projects across the state. A healthy and robust wild fish population indicates fresh and clean water, a necessity for all Californians.
